About the Author
Michael Sullivan, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at Chicago State University, received a Ph.D. in mathematics from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Mike taught at Chicago State for 35 years before recently retiring. He is a native of Chicago’s South Side and divides his time between a home in Oak Lawn IL and a condo in Naples FL. Mike is a member of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America. He is a past president of the Text and Academic Authors Association and is currently Treasurer of its Foundation. He is a member of the TAA Council of Fellows and was awarded the TAA Mike Keedy award in 1997 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. In addition, he represents TAA on the Authors Coalition of America. Mike has been writing textbooks for more than 35 years and currently has 15 books in print, twelve with Pearson Education. When not writing, he enjoys tennis, golf, gardening, and travel. Mike has four children: Kathleen, who teaches college mathematics; Michael III, who also teaches college mathematics, and who is his coauthor on two precalculus series; Dan, who is a sales director for Pearson Education; and Colleen, who teaches middle-school and secondary school mathematics. Twelve grandchildren round out the family. Mike Sullivan III is a professor of mathematics at Joliet Junior College. He holds graduate degrees from DePaul University in both mathematics and economics. Mike is an author or co-author on more than 20 books, including a statistics book and a developmental mathematics series. Mike is the father of three children and an avid golfer who tries to spend as much of his limited free time as possible on the golf course.

This textbook is very straightforward and the examples are easy to follow. Many good math textbooks receive poor reviews because they are attempted by students who do not have the necessary mathematical maturity to fully comprehend the text and read the worked problems. College students should not attempt precalculus unless they have a full understanding of basic algebra. Each math class expects the student to have a solid understanding of previous classes. I admit that many textbooks are not clear or just horrible. However, Sullivan's Precalculus 9th edition is well-written and easy to understand. It is giving me a good foundation for future classes. It is completely possible to utilize for self study. I always read the chapters before class, and I enjoy working the problems to gain further understanding. The textbook problems directly correlate with MyMathLab. Also, remember that there are usually only about ten examples, but many dozens of problems for each section. Thus, I would recommend using the Student Solutions Manual for this textbook, which is also an excellent product. That will help you approach the problems more easily.
I usually hate math textbooks but this is one of the better ones out there. It's designed in such a way as to be helpful at all levels. A section is always introduced with a prereq quiz so you know what prereqs are making the new concept difficult for you. It even points to an appendix with help on the material in question. This feature is really amazing because a difficult topic becomes easy once you know what your roadblocks are. It provides clear introductions to new concepts and then points you to a similar problem you can try out right after each objective is explained (the hands-on approach). What's amazing is that it's still a rigorous and sometimes challenging book while being very accessible for most. The problems range from the easy "check your understanding" type to more challenging mastery problems. I found this book to be more rigorous than the other precalc text I had to buy for a trig class. Somehow, it still managed to be understandable too.
The book provides a lot of information. However, a lot of explanations are not written in enough details. Some basic concepts are explained like for a 2 year old, while not so intuitive concepts are barely explained. This might be OK for someone who is studying Math, but most people are not. For this reason, I would expect a 900 pages book to provide more in depth explanation on all levels.
The book is just dandy. The problem is that I don't need it. If your instructor uses MathLab, buying or renting this book is pointless; you get a digital copy of it along with your $90 subscription to MathLab. Wait until your first class before you buy, you may save yourself some money.
Most people in the US expect to dish out egregious amounts of money for college.When shelling out $300 for a book, I expect the binding to, at least, hold the pages together and not crack apart after less than a week of usage. I really don't think that's too much to ask for the cost of 3 weeks of groceries for my family.
This book is a great book. I am able to figure out most of the exercises from the the given examples and explanations, but some answers won't make any sense if the student hasn't been given previous experience, as lets say the distance from the origin is 3 radical 3; which confused me at first, but for college freshmen is a little rough, especially in an early chapter.Other then what I just described, the book is an amazing math text book. On the other hand, with all the changes and requirements in to days schools, the text book may probably be right on track.With all the revised certification requirements for universities, most universities may now be requiring freshmen take supplementary algebra courses before attending university classes, which can be done at a junior college; which many universities parallel with a junior college anyway.Beings the Precalculus (10th Edition) by Michael Sullivan, is such a good book, I am not sure I want to return it. I may need this book for three semesters, and depending how long ETSU wants to use this book, it may be cost effective for me to purchase it.I may have gotten a little off track with this evaluation, but with the right text book what I said all folds together, which what is happening with this text book.
I purchased this book as an E-book but my son prefers a hardback version. I purchased the hardback version but was unable to return the E-book 10 days after it was purchased. There was no Return for Refund option. I called Pearson, the sellers, and was told they could not help me: they could no provide a refund.
Rented for a class. Isn't very helpful. Had to purchase an online code as well, and an e-text version of this is included for free.
